When it comes to commemorating the journey of love, anniversaries are those special checkpoints that deserve more than just a casual acknowledgment. For some people, the term ‘anniversary’ might refer to their first date, or their first kiss, or the first time they knocked boots together. No judgements here! Celebrate away!!! What’s important is to acknowledge your own special moments as a couple — it’s healthy for your relationship, it makes both people feel connected, and let’s face it, celebrations (whether large or small) are happy occasions. We could ALL use more happiness in our lives.
Here are some unique and heartfelt ways to celebrate your milestones, your anniversaries:
Memory Lane Adventure: Take a trip down memory lane by revisiting significant places in your relationship. Whether it's the place you first met, where you shared your first date, or where you got engaged, reliving these moments adds a touch of nostalgia to your celebration. And we all know: Nostalgia is the most powerful drug in the world, bar none.
DIY Time Capsule: Create a time capsule together filled with mementos, love letters, and items representing your relationship from its inception to the present day. Bury it in your backyard, or store it away in a garage or attic to be opened on a future anniversary. It's a sentimental way to capture the essence of your unique journey together. Movie ticket stubs, greeting cards from Valentine’s Days and birthdays, airline tickets, even goofy things you’re brought home from adventures together, like a weird rock or a snorkel. Matchbooks are a favorite of mine, though they’re not easy to come by these days. Yes, I’m old.
Experience-Based Celebrations: Move away from traditional gifts and opt for experiences. Whether it's a hot air balloon ride, a cooking class, or a weekend getaway to a nearby bed-and-breakfast, sharing new experiences helps to create lasting memories — and strengthens your bond together.
Renew Your Vows: Married folks sometimes have an inkling of a thought about renewing their vows, but usually shy away from what they fear could be a large expense, and promise themselves they’ll do so when their marriage reaches a traditional milestone, like 25 or 50 years together. BAH! Consider renewing your vows in a small, intimate ceremony, no matter how long you’ve been married. It doesn't have to be anything extravagant; a simple ceremony with close friends or even just the two of you can add a beautiful layer to your relationship. Serve cold cuts! Invite your friends. Perhaps you can invite friends and family who were, for whatever reason, not present at your wedding. Throw a little party! The objective here is to celebrate YOU as a couple.
Customized Photo Album or Scrapbook: Compile a photo album or scrapbook that chronicles your journey together. Include pictures from each year, along with notes and captions describing the special moments. It's a visual representation of your shared history. Everyone these days keeps their photos online, digitally; I recommended in a previous post creating something tangible to commemorate your relationship — celebrating a milestone within the relationship is the perfect time! See…
You do NOT need to be a professional scrapbooker to have fun with this (though I am sure you could find someone locally who IS, and pay them a little money to help you create something fabulous); the point is to create something together, and share in the memories you both experienced at the same time.
Surprise Date Night: Plan a surprise date night, incorporating elements that are meaningful to both of you. It could be revisiting your favorite restaurant, attending a show or event, recreating your first date, or organizing a cozy movie night at home (i.e., engage an off-site babysitter if needs be, rent a posh hotel room, something you wouldn’t normally do).
Symbolic Gifts: If you decide to exchange physical gifts, choose gifts that have symbolic meaning. For example, traditional anniversary gifts follow a theme for each year (like paper for the first, cotton for the second). Get creative and find a unique way to incorporate these themes into your celebration. Not just a Hallmark card that says, “Happy Anniversary!” Find ideas on Etsy (actually, find MUCH better, handmade cards on Etsy — I’ve been buying cards by and from Susan Tracie for years now, and they are universally loved and appreciated by their receivers: https://www.etsy.com/shop/susantracie).
Remember, the key is to tailor the celebration to your unique relationship, making it a reflection of your journey together. Whether grand or simple, the intention behind the celebration is what makes it truly meaningful. Cheers to many more years of love and joy!
